This charcoal study of a skull is from 2012 and although its not my most complex or best drawing so far, I look back at it often and always find it quite pleasing. I can't put my finger on why that is exactly. Despite the rather morbid subject matter there is a lightness to the execution which I feel works well. The value range is fairly narrow, with the darks confined to just half a dozen small areas.
This drawing contrasts with a second attempt at the same subject several months later and the results on that occasion were really disappointing. I keyed that drawing to a much darker average value and didn't manage to resolve the shapes nearly as well. The end result was a smudgy gloomy looking mess!
I'm also producing a small limited palette study in oil of the same subject and I will post the results on my blog as soon as its finished.
